Decorating a child’s room is one of the most exciting parts of parenting, especially when you get to infuse it with personal, handmade touches. Inspired by a pricey decor piece from Pottery Barn Kids, I decided to create my own DIY version for my little girl’s room. Pottery Barn Kids is known for their adorable, high-quality items, but their prices can sometimes be out of reach. So, instead of splurging, I set out on a creative journey to recreate the piece. Not only did it turn out beautifully, but it was also much more affordable. I’m thrilled with how it adds charm and character to her room. If you're looking for a fun and cost-effective project, you’ll love this DIY wall decor tutorial.
Why DIY Wall Decor?
Recreating the Pottery Barn Kids wall decor allowed me to personalize the space while sticking to a budget. The finished product is just as cute as the original, if not better, and it has the added benefit of being handmade. It's perfect for any little girl’s room, offering a touch of creativity and warmth. Best of all, this project is suitable for all skill levels, so whether you're a DIY enthusiast or a beginner, you’ll find this tutorial easy and enjoyable to follow.
Let’s dive into how you can make your own DIY wall decor inspired by Pottery Barn Kids, without breaking the bank.
Materials You'll Need:
- Picture frame (any size, but I used one that fits 9 3/8″ x 11 3/8″)
- Two sheets of white cardstock (12″ x 12″, trimmed to size)
- Colorful cardstock paper (7 different colors)
- Cricut Machine or paper trimmer
- Glue stick or adhesive
- Pencil for tracing
Step 1: Preparing Your Frame and Base
To begin, I dismantled the picture frame and removed the pre-printed paper inside. The size of this paper was 9 3/8″ x 11 3/8″, so I trimmed two sheets of white cardstock to match these dimensions. You can use a Cricut machine or a paper trimmer for precise cuts. This step is easy and ensures that you have a blank canvas to work with for the rest of your project.
Step 2: Creating the Heart Design
Next, I used my Cricut machine to cut a heart in the center of one of the white cardstock sheets. I made sure the heart was large enough to take up most of the width of the paper, leaving about 3/4" of space around the edges. This allowed room for additional decorative elements around the heart. If you don’t have a Cricut machine, don’t worry—any cutting tool will do the trick!
Step 3: Aligning the Heart Cutout
Now, with the heart cut out from one piece of cardstock, I placed it over the second piece and used it as a guide to trace the heart shape. This method ensured that the two hearts were perfectly aligned, which is essential for a clean, polished look in the final design.
Step 4: Adding Colorful Strips
For the next step, I chose seven different colors of cardstock and arranged them in an order that complemented each other without placing similar shades next to one another. I cut a 1/2” wide strip from each piece of cardstock, ensuring that each strip would fit within the heart shape.
Once the strips were ready, I glued them vertically onto the heart shape I had traced on the second piece of cardstock. I overlapped each strip slightly to cover the entire heart without leaving any gaps. Don’t worry if the strips aren’t perfectly straight—the inspiration piece wasn’t either, which gives the project a more relaxed, handmade feel.
Step 5: Final Assembly
With the colorful strips glued in place, I carefully positioned the white cardstock with the heart cutout over the striped heart and glued it together. Then, I inserted this layered artwork back into the picture frame. I opted not to use the pre-cut mat that came with the frame, allowing the colorful heart to be the focal point. The contrast between the white heart outline and the vibrant stripes underneath gave the piece a modern and polished look.
A Simple Yet Stunning Finish
The result was a beautiful, custom piece of wall decor that brought a vibrant and personalized touch to my daughter’s room. Not only did it save me money, but the process of making it was also enjoyable and rewarding. This project can easily be adapted to any color scheme or room theme, making it versatile for any space.
